Belgian deep-tech company D-CRBN has awarded Worley the engineering design contract for its renewable syngas demonstration plant in Antwerp, Belgium. The facility will use D-CRBN's proprietary plasma technology to convert CO₂ and biomethane into renewable syngas, an important feedstock for fuels and chemicals. Both D-CRBN and Worley are members of the Catalisti network.

D-CRBN Demo Plant

The demonstration plant will showcase D-CRBN's proprietary plasma technology, which uses electricity to convert CO₂ and biomethane into renewable syngas without the need for solvents or catalysts. The facility is designed to produce approximately 200 tonnes of renewable syngas per year, which can be used as a feedstock for the production of e-fuels and green chemicals.

Worley will be responsible for the design engineering, safety studies and cost estimation required to prepare the project for construction. D-CRBN will remain responsible for its proprietary plasma reactor technology, which will be integrated into the overall plant design.

For D-CRBN, the project marks an important step towards the commercial deployment of its technology. The modular demonstration plant will validate the process under continuous industrial operating conditions and provide a pathway towards a future commercial-scale facility capable of producing approximately 10,000 tonnes of renewable syngas per year.

“Moving into detailed engineering is an important milestone for D-CRBN. Worley’s experience in gas separation, multidisciplinary engineering and industrial project execution will help us translate our proprietary plasma technology into an integrated, safe and scalable demonstration unit.

Installing the plant at an industrial site in Antwerp will allow us to validate the technology under real operating conditions and generate the data and engineering know-how required for future commercial-scale deployment.”

A technology shaped through collaboration

This milestone builds on several years of innovation efforts within the Moonshot Flanders and Catalisti project portfolio. D-CRBN's plasma technology originated from research carried out in the Moonshot Flanders project D2M, which explored various catalytic routes for converting CO₂ into carbon monoxide (CO), an important chemical feedstock.

The technology was subsequently advanced in the Catalisti project BluePlasma, where D-CRBN collaborated with industrial partners ArcelorMittal, BASF, ENGIE, Talenco and Vopak, as well as research institutes VITO and the University of Antwerp, to bring plasma-based CO₂ conversion closer to laboratory-scale validation.

Today, D-CRBN continues to validate and scale up its technology within the Catalisti project GASTLY. Together with Aquafin and Eastman, the company is exploring how biogenic CO₂, biomethane and biogenic carbon can be converted into low-carbon syngas for use in existing chemical value chains.
