How can coating formulators replace fossil-based binders with bio-based alternatives without compromising performance? A new guide developed within the AddBIO COOCK+ project by Sirris and Centexbel VKC, supported by VLAIO, provides a practical overview of commercially available bio-based coating technologies.

Bio-based building blocks for coating formulations

The coatings industry is under increasing pressure to reduce its dependence on fossil-based resources and replace them with renewable alternatives. However, coatings based on renewable raw materials still need to deliver the required performance in terms of adhesion, durability, hardness, flexibility, chemical resistance and weatherability.

The new practical selection guide, Bio-based building blocks for coating formulations, helps companies navigate the growing range of available solutions. It provides an overview of commercially available products and suppliers for epoxy, polyurethane, acrylate and alkyd coatings.

Selecting the right bio-based binder, however, is not simply a matter of renewable content. Different applications come with different performance requirements, making the right choice of building blocks and formulation crucial.
