THERESA Open Market Consultation Belgium
The THERESA consortium invites innovative companies, research centres and technology providers to participate in our Open Market Consultation (OMC), a key step in a groundbreaking Pre-Commercial Procurement (PCP) initiative focused on addressing pharmaceutical contamination in hospital wastewater. This event provides a unique opportunity to understand the project’s technical, procurement and validation requirements and to engage directly with the European Buyers Group leading the challenge.

What is THERESA?
THERESA is a joint European initiative led by public healthcare organisations committed to developing next-generation hospital wastewater treatment systems that are:
- High-performance
- Sustainable and energy-efficient
- Feasible for real-world deployment
- Designed to neutralise contaminants directly at their source
The PCP process will guide the development, prototyping and validation of innovative solutions across three competitive phases.
What challenges are we addressing?
Hospital effluents contain complex pharmaceutical pollutants that conventional treatments cannot fully remove. THERESA seeks cutting-edge, scalable and environmentally responsible solutions capable of treating contaminants on site, before they reach public water systems.
We are particularly interested in technologies capable of removing cytostatic drugs, contrast agents, antibiotics and antibiotic-resistant bacteria and genes.
Who will you interact with?
THERESA is driven by a European Buyers Group formed by seven public healthcare organisations from five countries, all facing the shared challenge of ensuring safe and sustainable hospital wastewater management.
Participating organisations:
Spain – Navarrabiomed (Fundación Miguel Servet), Servicio Andaluz de Salud – Hospital Virgen Macarena, Consorci Hospitalari de Vic
The Netherlands – Maastricht UMC+
Belgium – Ziekenhuis Aan De Stroom (ZAS)
Estonia – Põhja-Eesti Regionaalhaigla (PERH)
Poland – Wojewódzki Szpital Specjalistyczny w Olsztynie (WSS)
The Buyers Group is coordinated by Fundación Miguel Servet (FMS), acting on behalf of all procurers.
