Nippon Shokubai Europe launches CATAQUA™ pilot plant for more sustainable wastewater treatment
Nippon Shokubai Europe has officially unveiled its new CATAQUA™ pilot plant in Zwijndrecht (Antwerp). The pilot installation showcases the company’s proprietary technology for the treatment of industrial wastewater streams that are difficult to process with conventional thermal treatment methods. The CATAQUA™ plant marks an important milestone in Nippon Shokubai’s long-term commitment to the European environmental solutions market.
The technology behind the new CATAQUA™ pilot plant, called ‘Catalytic Wet Air Oxidation’, uses catalysts and air to break down organic pollutants and hazardous compounds in wastewater into substances such as carbon dioxide, water, nitrogen and sulphates. According to Nippon Shokubai, the advanced treatment process can remove more than 90% of organic pollutants from industrial wastewater while generating less waste than conventional thermal treatment methods.
The technology is particularly suitable for industrial wastewater containing refractory organic compounds, nitrogen-containing compounds and sulphur-containing compounds that can be challenging for conventional biological treatment systems. Typical applications include wastewater streams from chemical manufacturing, petrochemical operations and related industrial sectors.
Tomoaki Suzuki, President, Nippon Shokubai Europe: “CATAQUA™ represents our ambition to bring proven wastewater treatment expertise to European industry. As environmental regulations become more stringent and industries seek more sustainable treatment solutions, we believe CATAQUA™ can provide a valuable option for treating difficult industrial wastewater streams.”
Demonstrating CATAQUA™ on industrial wastewater in Europe
The containerised pilot unit enables wastewater treatment trials to be conducted closer to European customers, allowing treatment performance to be evaluated under representative operating conditions. The facility supports customer testing and enables the innovative technology to be demonstrated on actual industrial wastewater streams.
The pilot skid also supports Nippon Shokubai’s European growth strategy, helping customers assess the technology in practice, facilitating faster decision-making and raising awareness of the CATAQUA™ technology across the region.
Towards more sustainable and cost-effective industrial wastewater treatment
Industrial companies across Europe face increasing pressure to improve wastewater management while reducing environmental impact and operating costs. Nippon Shokubai’s innovative water treatment technology offers several potential advantages, including efficient treatment of difficult wastewater streams, the absence of sludge formation and the possibility of energy recovery from the oxidation process.
The new pilot facility will enable Nippon Shokubai to test and demonstrate the technology on industrial wastewater streams in Europe.
