Flanders is a powerhouse for plastics, distinct even within our massive chemical cluster. While Antwerp hosts the largest integrated cluster for polymer production in Europe, regions like West Flanders and Limburg are world-class hubs for plastics processing and conversion. This unique combination—where raw material production meets high-tech manufacturing—makes our region the ideal "living lab" for the future of plastics. We are one of the few places on earth with the expertise to lead the next industrial revolution.

Despite our leadership, the path to true circularity is a hard one. We face a disconnect between design and end-of-life, where high-performance plastics are often doomed to downcycling or incineration. The economic reality is also harsh: the business case for high-quality recyclates is under pressure, creating a "valley of death" for circular innovations. How do we bridge the gap between technical possibility and economic viability? Professor Kim Ragaert will share her vision on how to build on our strengths and overcome these difficulties.
